Machu Picchu (Quechua Machu Pikchu) is een ruïnestad van de Inca's in Peru. Deze stad die op een bergtop in de Andes ligt werd in de 15e eeuw gebouwd en was waarschijnlijk bedoeld als buitenverblijf voor de koning en andere edelen. Deze werd in de 16e eeuw verlaten om in 1866 herontdekt te worden.
Bijna 600 jaar geleden werd Machu Picchu door de Inca's gebouwd en het is ontzettend bijzonder dat deze stad na al die jaren nog zo goed bewaard is gebleven. Dit komt mede doordat de Spanjaarden de stad nooit gevonden hebben en door de unieke bouwstijl die zelfs tegen aardbevingen bestand is.


Dankzij de unieke ligging op een moeilijk te bereiken locatie is de Inca stad in de bergen in het Andesgebergte van Peru pas laat ontdekt, misschien kunnen we daarom vandaag de dag nog wel genieten van de goed bewaard gebleven stad! Deze unieke plek is dan ook met recht één van de 7 moderne wereldwonderen.
