Vandaag bezoeken we Tenorio Volcano National Park, gelegen in de noordelijke laaglanden van de provincie Guanacaste in Costa Rica, staat bekend om de Tenorio-vulkaan, natuurlijke warmwaterbronnen, wandelpaden, dieren in het wild en vooral de Rio Celeste-waterval.
“Sommige plaatsen zijn moeilijk te geloven dat ze bestaan ​​totdat je ze ziet en zelf ervaart! Rio Celeste was een van die plaatsen!”

Rio Celeste vertaalt naar lichtblauwe rivier. Volgens de lokale legende was God, nadat hij klaar was met het schilderen van de lucht, zijn penselen in de rivier en veranderde in het schitterende blauw dat ons vandaag de dag fascineert.

De krachtige Rio Celest-waterval stort 30 meter diep in een poel van helderblauw water, omringd door dicht tropisch bos. Het contrast is persoonlijk net zo opvallend als op foto's - een echte ruwe diamant.

Vanaf het rangerstation tot de afslag naar de waterval is het pad relatief vlak en geasfalteerd (ongeveer twintig minuten). Verder is de rest van de wandeling onverhard. Zodra je het afslagpunt naar de waterval bereikt, moet je een reeks van ongeveer 250 steile geplaveide trappen afdalen. Het is een beetje een uitdaging op de terugweg, maar de moeite waard! Gewoon stoppen, ademen en genieten van het landschap - vaak. 🙂

Sommige mensen kiezen ervoor om de waterval als laatste in de reeks te bezoeken om zichzelf weer op te laden voordat ze teruggaan naar het rangerstation. Als je ervoor kiest om dat te doen, is Laguna Azul het eerste hoogtepunt dat je tegenkomt.

Veel mensen zeggen dat deze magische kleine poel van blauw water doet denken aan de magische zeemeerminlagune in Peter Pan.

Los Borbollones

Na Laguna Azul gaat u verder naar Los Borbollones, een plek in de rivier waar zwavelgassen van de vulkaan door het water omhoog borrelen.

Na het oversteken van een brug in Indiana-Jones-stijl en een reeks pittoreske vaste lage bruggen, kom je aan bij een van de laatste hoogtepunten van het parcours. El Teñidero wordt gevormd waar de mineralen van twee rivieren samenkomen (Quebrada Agria en Rio Buena Vista) - Rio Celeste wordt helderblauw. Het is een indrukwekkend gezicht om te zien hoe de anders normaal ogende rivieren samenkomen in één elektrisch blauwe stroom.



Er is één wandelpad in het Tenorio Volcano National Park dat je langs een groot aantal wonderen voert, maar uiteindelijk naar de schitterende blauwe Rio Celeste. Dit uitdagende in-en-uit parcours - 3 1/2 mijl in totaal -



Located in the northern lowlands of the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica, Tenorio Volcano National Park is known for Tenorio Volcano, natural hot springs, hiking trails, wildlife, and most notably, Rio Celeste Waterfall.

Rio Celeste translates to light blue river. Local legend has it that after God was finished painting the sky, he washed his paintbrushes in the river turning in the brilliant blue that fascinates us today.

There is one hiking trail within Tenorio Volcano National Park which brings you past a multitude of wonders, but ultimately to the brilliant blue Rio Celeste. This challenging in-and-out trail – 3 1/2 miles in total – showcases the following highlights of the park (in order):

The powerful Rio Celest Waterfall plunges 98 feet into a pool of bright blue water surrounded by dense tropical forest. The contrast is as striking in person as it is in photos – a true diamond in the rough.

From the ranger station to the waterfall turnoff, the trail is relatively flat and paved (about twenty minutes). Beyond that, the remainder of the hike is unpaved. Once you reach the turnoff point to the waterfall, you’ll need to descend a series of about 250 steep paved stairs. It’s a bit of a challenge on the return ascent, but worth it! Just stop, breathe, and enjoy the scenery – often. 🙂

Some people choose to visit the waterfall last in the sequence to re-energize themselves before the trek back to the ranger station. If you choose to do that, the first highlight you’d come across would be Laguna Azul.

Many people say this magical little pool of blue water is reminiscent of the magic mermaid lagoon in Peter Pan.

Los Borbollones

After Laguna Azul, continue on down to Los Borbollones, a spot in the river where sulfuric gases from the volcano bubble up through the water.

After crossing an Indiana-Jones style bridge and a series of picturesque fixed low bridges, you’ll arrive at one of the last highlights of the trail. El Teñidero is formed where the minerals of two rivers meet (Quebrada Agria and Rio Buena Vista) – turning Rio Celeste bright blue. It’s an impressive sight to see as the otherwise normal-looking rivers converge into one electric blue current.
