Ice

IJsland, Skaftafell

This day we went up early to do a glacier hike. So we came at the meeting point and it turned out that we were a day too early. Probably we lost track of days. So we tried to get on the tour of this day, but it didn't work. We had an odd feeling about it. We were happy because it meant we had another day in Iceland, but also sad because we had to stay and wait, so we could not put this day to a good use. So we decided to cancel the glacier walk and go on with our travel. To bad we couldn't get a refund, because we had to go back to Reykjavik. We traveled to the east some more and came by the Skaftafell National Park. Here was also a Mountain Guide office. So we went in and asked if it was possible to join a glacier hike with the reservation we made for tomorrow. And it was possible! This tour was a little shorter and cheaper, but we even got a refund for the difference. And to be honest, this area was much more nicer. And it wasn't raining. So the situation turned out to be better then the original. We had a nice walk, a little shallow maybe. What surprised me was that the glacier wasn't that white and blue as the glacier we hiked in Norway. Maybe a bit disappointing, but the reason was pretty cool. The glaciers in Iceland turn out to be grey because of the ashes from the volcanic eruptions. There were also like piles of ashes on the glacier that did move like dunes in the dessert do. It's a nice nature phenomenon. After the glacier walk we went to the glacier lakes. The first lake Fjallsárlón wasn't accessible by car, the second lake Breiðamerkursárlón didn't have any any ice in it. And the third and biggist lake Jökulsárlón was just beautiful. We decided to spent the night at the river that flows from the lake to the sea, and we watched drifting pieces of ice till we were to tired to keep our eyes open.
