Today was highland time. In the morning we made everything ready for a few days in the wilderness. So we made sure we had enough fresh water, did get the last supplies from the supermarket and off we went. First we had to drive back a bit to take the F88. In Iceland all the roads with a F are highland roads and can only be accessed with 4x4 vehicles. After we took the turn we encountered some hitchhikers that wanted to go to Herðubreið. It's a mountain in the shape of a table that we would cross along our way. They were planning to climb the mountain. When they heard our way was going to Askja they asked us if they could travel with us because they were very lucky with the hitchhiking and had some extra time. We were heading that way anyway, so it was no problem. Along our way we encounterd some rivers to go through. I was a little nervous about it. What if we get stuck or water flows in our van? Then the interior would be wrecked. The first river went fine. The water came in a little at the footsteps by the front doors. The second river was very big and there was a rope to drive by. It was really exciting because the water in the footsteps came very high. In the middle of the river we were floating a little, so the wheels were slipping a bit. But we came out, then we immediately opened up all the doors to let the water out, and it was like "splash". Luckily there wasn't much water in the interior, almost none. We were surprised and delighted at the same time. They third river of the day was easy peasy. When we arrived at the mountains it was very cloudy, so we decided to wait for the next day to climb the Askja (we did learn something of our hiking in the Faroe Islands). But our hitchhikers took the hike (they had no choice, than do it immediately) and we did a late lunch and some chilling. Then we brought them back at the foot of the mountain. The campsite where we would spent the night was also there. We did a short walk in the Drekagil (dragoncanyon). It was one of the places where the astronauts have trained for their expedition on the moon. It was a nice walk and there was a nice waterfall. The rest of the evening we did have a nice dinner and played some games in our blankets. It was very cold outside, around zero degrees. And we were nice and cosy in our van :D
