Today was going to be a day full of activities, so we went up early. We were going to drive from Pórshöfn to Mývatn and there we a lot if things to see and to do along the way. So many that we were not able to do everything and made some decisions what to do and what to skip. So we decided to do some stuff that is typical for this area like walking along the shore, birdwatching and the great attraction of the day, the Dettifoss. First we took a hike of approximately 2 hours at the Rauðanes. There were a lot of nice shaped rocks and a birdcliff where we could see puffins very closely and took some really nice pictures. Then we went to the peninsula of Melrakkaslétta. There we picked up some hitchhikers that were going to hike from the most northern point to the most southern point in Iceland. We dropped them off close to the most northern point of Iceland, Hraunhafnartangi. Then we went to some cliffs with gannets (Jan van Genten) on it. The cliffs were very close so we could take very nice pictures. Then we drove to the Dettifoss. The Dettifoss the the most large waterfall in Europe. It's 44 meters high, 100 meters wide and there falls 193 m3 of water down in 1 second. We never have encountered a waterfall this big. We also enjoyed the "smaller" waterfall, the Sellfoss. The road was heading towards Mývatn, but on the way we came by Hevrir and we just had to stop. There was an area with volcanic activity. So there were fumaroles and hot mud pools in a nice scenery. After watching it we noticed the time went very quickly. It was already 19.30 and we didn't have dinner yet. So we made some quick food on the parking lot. Then we went to search for a place to stay the night. We wanted to stay somewhere along the road. After a while we found a nice spot. Unfortunately the fun didn't take too long. A ranger came by to tell us we could not stay along the way in this area. And I did remember reading something about it, probably there are really strict about it. So we had to go to a designated campsite. We already did see a very nice one. So we knew where to go.
