From Queenstown to home.

Zuid-Afrika, grahamstown

Waking after a very comfortable night at TranquiLodge brought the realization that the adventure was coming to an end. It was also a very important day - Marianne's birthday. Although cold, it was nothing like the day before. We got the car packed, always an issue with a camper as there are no suitcases or bags to use. Then we popped in for breakfast, only all bran, a slice of bread and coffee. We filled up with diesel and then took the Fort Beaufort road.
The first few kilometers of the road were not good, but then it improved dramatically. We had both forgotten about the Nico Malan pass which was a dramatic drop of almost 600m. Just before Fort Beaufort we stopped at Baddaford farm stall for coffee and quiche and milktart and also bought a pocket of oranges. At least Marianne got some birthday cake! We turned into Fort Beaufort to see what was happening and found it quite depressing, although there seemed to be some functioning guest houses. We were surprised to see how many people were selling oranges. We hoped that they had been properly obtained. The lovely Queen's Road to Grahamstown was also in good condition until just before the intersection, where there was a short stop and go. We were lucky and were hardly delayed. We stopped for lunch in Grahamstown, going to the Bakery as we had done a few weeks before. Then it was onto the road to home, only 120 km away. There was a strong northerly wind blowing, but the road was in good condition with little traffic and we were soon passing Nanaga, then Sundays River, where the Bay is seen for the first time, Coega and the Swartkops River. Turning off the freeway gave us some more speed bumps to practice on and then we were pulling into our driveway. All that remained was to collect Kit. A really good adventure had come to an end.
