29 May 2019 Back to Munich

"We woke up to light drizzle. The facilities at the standplace were excellent and we made use of them to do a final clean up of the toilet and topped up the flushing water. This would avoid it needing to be done in front of Manfred’s house. Then it was back to the motorway and we were soon crossing the border into Germany. There was very little traffic going our way, but the solid stream of cars, campers and caravans heading south towards the Adriatic showed that the holidays were starting. Where it been relaxingly quiet, was from now on going to be very busy."

We had been looking forward to going to Hitler’s Berchtesgaden, but it was high in the mountains and the mountains were definitely in the cloud. It would probably be a waste of time so we gave up on the idea.

At about 11h30 we made a coffee stop at a McDonalds and then at lunchtime turned off into the little village of Chieming on the Chiemsee and found a lovely place for lunch - the Stumhofer Backerei Konditorei. Their ham rolls went down very well. German fresh bread rolls must be some of the very best. We walked around the town for a bit of a stretch and then had another short stop at the edge of the lake and did a bit of duck watching.

The final stretch was done in pouring rain with lots of traffic still going the other way. We turned off onto a minor route and drove through the lovely Bavarian countryside to Starnberg. Here we found a garage to fill up for the last time. Then we drove slowly back to the Illenberger’s house, thinking at the last moment that we had lost our way, but when we turned right the camper was safely home.
