30 May 2019 Last day in Starnberg
This time we had opted to sleep in the camper. After all, it had been our home for three weeks now and it was not as cold as it had been three weeks ago before we left. Colleen and Manfred were up early, because Manfred was leaving on his motorbike trip to Sardinia. We spent some time cleaning the camper and doing some serious washing. The weather was not great, but the sun did come out every now and then. Colleen also had to go somewhere and we decided to go cycling. We were still very keen to cycle around Starnberg Lake and it would also be fun to use our bicycles for a last time. Colleen had also warned us that all the shops would be closed on 31 May and if we wanted to buy some “padkos” for the road, we should go to the bakery at the station. It was a steep ride down to the lake and it being a long weekend, the boulevard was packed with holiday makers. It was initially quite difficult to cycle alongside the water and after trying in a anti-clockwise direction, we went the other way. The weather was fine and the sun was even trying to come out. We passed some little marinas, landing stages, jetties where the lake ferry stopped and parks with benches. At times we were all alone next to the lovely lake. The path became quite narrow and steep and led through some small lakeside settlements with lively cafes. The path also took us through a forest and to the Schloss Berg (the castle mountain) with its romantic castle and a monument to King Ludwig 11 who drowned here in 1886 in mysterious circumstances. There was also a huge youth centre where young people get a chance to enjoy water sports and outdoor activities. We have no idea how far we went, but it was quite a distance and we still had to get back. Colleen was very surprised to hear how far we had cycled. It was our last evening at the Illenbergers and we still had to finalize our packing. We were very glad that we had opted for the Flixbus to get us to Amsterdam rather than the train which would have meant changing trains three times. At least once we were on the bus, we could just stay seated. We chatted to Colleen for some time and then it was time to sleep in the camper for a last time. We had certainly had fun and the camper way of travel had given us the freedom to explore a completely new part of Europe without the stress of worrying about the weather – and it turned out to be something to really worry about!! So often we were thanking our lucky stars that we were not sitting in a wet tent!
